Management
Oversee costume and material inventory, check stock on a regular basis
Review resumes and conduct interviews to identify, hire, and manage an average of 10 student workers
Create weekly schedules for 6 part-time staff and all student workers, as per scheduling requirements
Supervise all costume shop staff and daily operations, do final checks on all show builds and projects
Create, manage, and implement all costume shop policies and procedures
Plan the costume shop season for all theatrical and individual productions, prevent any conflicts
Organize and redesign the costume shop to be an efficient workspace and meet any needs that arise
Instruct students in the execution of the costume design for production, teach staff proper technique
Manage purchasing of fabric, notions, and other Costume Shop supplies and accessories
Schedule and perform monthly maintenance on sewing, laundry, and other shop equipment
Meet with clients to gather notes for designs and ensure proper execution
Communicate with assistants to ensure smooth operations
Direct crew members during the staging process for assigned projects to achieve correct design
Oversee each design project, keeping everything at or under budget and on the scheduled timeline
Track receipts and petty cash to keep correctly balanced budgets, submit monthly to billing department
Develop relationships with costume designers and fabricators to use facilities to generate earned revenue at the end of each season
Costume Design
Measure cast for each show to plan design needs before shows, ask them to bring in any potential costume pieces
Communicate with the director and stage manager for all scripts, cast lists, song lists, and contact info
Prepare for the dress parade by pulling, renting, and buying all necessary costume pieces
In case of absence during any show run, communicate with team about any needed alterations or adjustments
Schedule the dress parade according to the stage manager, director, and the rest of the shop’s availability
Be on call for the duration of the show for all preview nights, runs, and strike; find coverage, if needed
Maintain a clean and orderly workspace, keep all costumes and material stored as per shop rules
Watch the show run through, discuss with director and stage manager, accept and correct any critiques
Build any non-costume items for the show (curtains, pillows, etc.), as per the stage manager’s requests
Keep track of costumes, manage returns and rentals, properly store and return all costume pieces and accessories
